Autumn fruiting raspberries
Hello. I'm new to the forum, so I hope someone out there can advise me please. A year ago I bought an autumn-fruiting raspberry; it flourished well and I've been looking forward to a proper crop this year. However, I now see that it's putting up suckers all over my (tiny) veg plot, so I'd like to know if I should cut all of them off. Or perhaps I should leave the ones coming up near the original plant and cut off the others? Any advice much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Elaine. Welcome.
Autumn fruiting raspberries creep across the plot, sometimes from a neighbouring area, and that is how you get a lot more than you originally paid for. On the allotments they thrive on neglect and grow into huge thickets that produce fat fruits in late summer. The received wisdom is to reduce the number of canes if they are overcrowded, and enjoy the free plants that the original one is providing.
Many thanks indeed. I hadn't realised they were so vigorous! But much as I love raspberries, I think I'll just keep the few canes nearest to the original one otherwise I won't be able to grow anything else!
