Bird hunting flies
At about 7pm today I saw a bird flying around my garden, it was about the size of a great tit (14cm), it was a dull brown (same color as a song thrush), I couldn't get any a clear view of any specific markings. I live in Hertfordshire which is south east England. Any ideas on what bird it could be? I've never seen this bird behavior before nor do I recognize the bird. I'll keep an eye out for the bird and I'll try and get a picture of it, though I don't think It will visit again as a animal that I must not name decided to run across my garden scaring all the birds off (cough.. Cat)

Just a few suggestions - a bit early for the last two but this is an odd season ...
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I've looked at the all of them but non of them seem to fit the image in my head, I did consider the flycatcher but its too early as you said, I do often get birds passing through, a few weeks ago I had a nut thatch in the garden..
Maybe it'll be back tomorrow evening

A female blackbird perhaps at 14cm?
Female grey wagtail?
Chiff Chaff?
Chiffchaff was my first thought also - plenty around now and singing incessantly. You can ID them by the way they frequently wag their tail downwards while moving about.
