It's a bit early for leeks I'd have thought Tony. I've never topped or tailed a leek. Just a nice deep hole and water them in.

if you wrap the roots in kitchen roll they might have trouble getting thru it to get to the soil,

as for topping and tailing I also have never done that, it makes no sense to me to chop off healthy bits of plants???

  • It was a way I think Geoff Hamilton used ,I may be wrong.

hi tony I have heard about what you say I have tailed them.. but are you putting kitchen towel to stop any soil getting  into   leeks in the years I have done them  if you are careful when you water them in it will be ok  my leeks are still in a big pot growing

  • YesI,it's when you puddle them in they can get gritty.

hi tony that is why we just make hole put leek in and carefully put water in hole and leave it at that over the years as long as you are carefull grit will not get in  so as not to fill them with soil ( try and not wash soil in hole )   Michael
