Crabgrass in Lawn - how to get rid?

Hey everyone I think I have an invasion of crabgrass in my lawn. I didn't realise it was crabgrass until did a bit of research but seems I have and it's got larger in the last two years since owning our property. I will get a photo up as I would like other people's opinions if it is crabgrass. I would say it's about 15-20% of the lawn is crabgrass, so how do I get rid of it? Shall I just returf that area or re-seed or battle it?

Do you mean this stuff TF?

I have some patches of it. Seems to be a more common 'problem' in the US from the little I have read up on it. Not a great deal of options on getting rid with hand-weeding seemingly the best option if not too much area to deal with.

  • Yes looks very similar although mine might be different if it's usually in USA mainly.

    Will get photos up asap

These pics are from my lawn in Hants. It looks like some kind of ornamental grass. The reason I mention the US is if you have a look on google there seem to be quite a few of the links heading in that direction. Lawn weedkiller doesn't see it as a broadleaf weed so has no effect.

I think crab grass is the American name for cooch grass.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

    OK thanks Redwing.

Having looked at various references to couch grass I don't believe that is what I have in my lawn (see photos above). This is a low sprouting plant, almost ornamental in looks, like a miniature cordyline. Fortunately I only have a few patches of it which I mostly dug out yesterday then added some lawn seeding soil and re-seeded. I'm not overly worried as not after a bowling green and these little shoots, whatever they are, are predominately green anyway!

Well, after googling, googling and some more googling I'm fairly sure I've at last got a positive ID on my 'weed' and that is nutsedge. Control of it looks challenging with most products seemingly available in the US....

Be interesting to see if it might be the same for you Turnipfarmer?

  • I've finally got round to getting some photos of it and here it is

    What do people think?

  • Sorry fixed the photos again, let me know what you all think.

The first photo you can see the strange grass on the left hand side and the grass that it seems to be invading on the right.

The photo below it is a close up of it, horrible looking stuff.

  • Any idea anyone?
