Greenhouse Soil..any ideas?
Hi,
We have a beautiful greenhouse in our garden. A couple of years ago we had to replace the rotten wooden frame and popped an aluminium frame ontop of the original brick base. The greenhouse has proper beds in it, bricked into the structure. When we had the frame rebuilt, the well kept (mainly thanks to the previous house owner) soil got ruined. Bits of brick etc and I had to chuck a load of it out. So, the husband got me a load of compost, I can't remember whick type, as soon as I dug it in I realised it wasn't right. When I water in there it somehow holds the water in a bog on top, then the soil underneath is bone dry. Last year was not much better , but I couldn't dig well last yea
r. How can I fix it? I've dug through it and sprinkled some fertiliser, today I've really got stuck in and dug right down to try and disperse the soil, yet I'm still left with top bog soil. I really want a better crop this year. Any advice would be greatfully received. Cheers, Caroline.

You need to incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or home made compost as you can. Bagged MPC isn't suitable, that's why it's forming a crust. Turn it quite deeply adding the manure ( you can buy it bagged), then water it in. It should break down quite quickly. Give it a month before you plant anything in it, it should be OK.
Thank you so much for your help.
I'll sort that this weekend.
