Raspberry choice
in Fruit & veg
I've never really liked raspberries, a bit too pippy for me and fairly weak on flavour, however, the OH loves them. So I have reluctantly carved out a small space (from my strawberries ) designated as raspberry space. It's about 3 ft by 3ft, up against a south facing wall, but is shaded most of the morning by our garage. I think this is a little small for a multiple cane setup, so I was thinking of one of the new clumpy forms such as 'Ruby Beauty' or 'Glen Coe'. Has anyone tried these? Any advice or opinions please.
Oh, and our soil is clay - I can make pots out of the unadulterated top soil . I have half a bag of manure and most of a bag sand earmarked for this spot. Is that alright for raspberries?

I planted three Ruby Beauty plants in containers last year, they are now growing well and are sturdy little plants (and pretty). I haven't had a crop yet - they fruit on last year's canes, like summer raspberries.
I had Glen Coe, supposedly growing 2m high but actually growing to 4m, hence they broke the wires, and when I used thicker wires, the poles broke. The fruits were fairly small, not terribly productive and a bit bland, albeit better when left to go purple. They did clump and did not spread. The young blackbirds liked them, it was fun watching them jump up to eat them. I replaced them with Polka.
Thanks for the replies. Height isn't a problem, may be an advantage as there will be some fruit out of reach of the dogs. They'll be growing up a concrete slab fence so firm support is available. I'm leaning towards Glen Coe, with maybe an option of containers for Ruby Beauty later. Must check the OH has no prejudice against purple raspberries.
Yes, I ate them when red, and when dark purple, I didn't think too much of them even when dark purple. Sadly. They were quite pricey as I had to buy the plants in pots.
