How deep for pond marginals?

I would like to know how deep I can plant marginals in my pond.

I need to know the depth from the top of the pot to the water surface.Tried Googling but they give a depth and I'm not sure where its being measured from!

Also any ideas for best plants in a pond?

Anywhere from just covering the top of the pot with water , to a out 10 - 30 cm below the surface, depending on the plant.

Smaller plants, such as geum and forget me nots need to be shalower than a botumus umbellatus.

If you look on line at eg lilies water garden it will give you planting depths

As a rough rule of thumb, the top of the baskets for marginals should be an inch or 2 below the surface.  Some, as darren636 has said, will tolerate being deeper but won't harm if just covered.

Most marginals will just adapt madpenguin - coping easily with up to six inches  of water above them. If you put them in at around two or three inches, that will be fine for them and allows for any evaporation during the summer.

I can't do the links here to put you onto one of the many pond threads we've had, but you could look at one of the specialist nurseries online which will give you ideas. Puddleplants or Merebrook for example.

Also - how big is your pond, as that affects the amount of plants you would put directly into it. image

Thanks everyone.A lot of the sites never explain what the depth is and where it is measured from.

I have lots of plants for my new pond (saved from my old pond). The new pond has deeper shelves so as just hoping they will be OK.

You can always put a brick or something similar onto shelves that are too deep and sit your pots on that. image
