UV Bulb in pond

Hi

Happy spring.

Im just putting a new UV into my pond filter and i noticed 2 tiny balls rolling around in the tubes. The bulb is brand new and i dont want to fit it as its quite awkward to get in and out. It looks intact and perfect other than the tiny balls, are they to do with the UV or is it broken??

Any Ponders

Rich, the balls are Mercury which vapourises when the bulb gets hot and it is the gaseous (actually a plasma) Mercury which emits the UV.  For this reason, dispose of the old bulb properly (ie it needs to go with WEEE electrical recycling and don't put it in your dustbin) and take care not to break the glass as Mercury is very toxic.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
