Climbers for 9 in depth container

seakaleseakale Posts: 142

i have 2 rectangular wooden troughs with a trellis attached.  The depth is 9 inches.

they face west south west.  The trellis needs to be covered with a flowering plant, preferably summer.  My putting depp needs to be shielded.

i did think patio clematis, but I think they need at least 18 inches for root depth.

sweet peas, orange trumpet vine or or, suggestions please.  I have already filled the troughs manure on bottom leavingtons on top

How about planting ivy as a backdrop and growing something like thunbergia alata (black eyed susan) through the foliage. With shallow soil you will need to make sure the plants don't dry out. The ivy will give you year round cover and you can vary the sort of flowers you add from year to year.
