Bedding plant recommendation

I had some lovely plug Antirrhinum last year - Sweet Williams & Red Petunias too. The Antirrhinums didn't last very long though - the sweet williams were disappointing & the petunias didn't like the rain & wind  - can anyone suggest a good bedding plant that can withstand the unseasonal summer weather that we seem to be experiencing for the past few years.

  • The bedding shouldn't be more than about 8 - 10 inches tall either!

Apart from the obvious bush lobelia I've grown ageratum "blue mink" for the past couple of years it has lovely fuzzy flower heads. I also had a nemesia in a lovely pale lemon (other colours are available).

Although I can't stand them busy Lizzie's are low as well.

  • Yes busy lizzies - I don't like them either but they do last a while - we also had some bedding begonias last year - I am not keen on them but they did flower for quite a long time and didn't seem to wilt in the hot sunshine and are low plants but with bright flowers (red ones). I find lobelia  finish too early or perhaps I didn't water them enough?

I'm in Manchester so watering isn't so much of a problem for me image

These are some of my shorties for this year along with lobelia, pink candytuft and white allysum. I have more of a purple, pink and blue thing going on but am trying to introduce more hot colours, oranges and reds etc.

    Sorry it's sideways. image

  • That should make a pretty display Kitty 2 - I can't get over the cheap price of your seeds - we don't get special deals like that here - everything that is imported is expensive.

Pretty sure the seeds shown in Kitty's photo are all  annuals - they may self seed, but the plants themselves only last one year.

Hi aym,  Dove is right, one summers splash of colour then it's all over.

I am a slave to my annuals but I love it image  sowed 32 varieties last week.

It doesn't have to be expensive. I got 20 + packets of seed from wilko at 75% off and the 3 for 2 offer still worked. Spent just over £3.

Kitty, most of my seeds came from Wilko at the end of last year for 10p a packet. Some say plant by 2018 so well in date. I also bought 15m hoses( 9 of them )with connectors for £1.50 and packs of 50 plant labels for 20p a pack. I also got one of those " garden claw" type things for £1.50

It's a great place to buy stuff at the end of the season as they mark everything down to such silly money.

    Devon.
