Salvia 'Amistad'

Another question.

I have/had 2 Salvia 'Amistad' that looked wonderful all last year. I pruned them back in the autumn and then left well alone. This year neither shows any sign of life and I suspect my mulch is not going to help.

Should I dig them up or wait and see?  I presume they are dead, if so  what happened I understood them to be hardy plants. We have had only an occasional frost and they sit in a sunny site in a raised bed.

Really would like to replace them but only if I know what went wrong.

I had 6 in 2014, but only 2 made it through the winter, so I had 2 in 2015. They aren't showing any signs, but perhaps it's too early. I should have taken cuttings.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thanks Busy-Lizzie. I agree and will make sure I have some cuttings next time. Am hopeful that at least you say it might be too early

I find Amistad is only really hardy if the drainage is really good, plenty of grit in the planting hole. I take cuttings every year as well.

Yeah drainage is a real necessity if our winters are going to bewet

I've got three saliva black and blue?  I think that's the name, labels are in the other room. Mine survived in pots huddled on the patio so they've been soaked but snug,  just showing tiny shoots now image

  • I really would like to have salvias in my garden.

are theye hard to grow form seed? Does it take long from seed to healthy size?!

best of luck to all salvia owners!!!
