Vine weevil grubs and Heucheras

I'm a fan of Heucheras. I've got about 20 in the garden in various places, some in large containers and some in a bed which is in open ground, but is boxed in by a ground level sleeper. Unfortunately the dreaded vine weevil larvae has taken a liking to all but 2 of them and I've had to pull them all out. I've cleaned down the roots and replanted into fresh soil in small plantpots for now to re-establish their root systems before I plant them out again. I've not treated them before but need to tackle this problem or I'm going to have this problem every year. Is it best to use a liquid solution or nematodes? If the latter, is the ground warm enough yet to use them? I must have squeezed about 30 of them over 3 plants the last couple of days, then left their empty bodies for the birds!

I use something I buy here in France, probably horrible and poisonous, but I've hear English friends say that Provado is good.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Great thanks, I'll pick some up. They're big pots so might need a fair quantity. Im talking about 200l of compost in each one.

Hi.. can I jump in with a question re Nematodes?   I just purchased some from Ebay.  (It says you can begin using them in March or when soil is 5C).   They came yesterday with an expiry date of 20 April.   Is it usual to have such a short expiry date or should I complain?   I was hoping to wait a bit as I just emptied the worst of my containers.... Hundreds and hundreds,,, but wanting to protect my blueberries.

Watery, I've never used them but I understand the short date might be do to with the fact the nematodes are alive and ,as such, won't live forever in the pack.

    Might well be wrong.
