Moles

Any ideas on how to deter mole(s)?

I have a long narrow garden (15' x 300' approx) and there are molehills along the whole length. My neighbour has a sonic mole scarer which is irritating me but doesn't seem to be doing anything to the mole and, if it is working, it would cover my garden too.

This has been going on for about 6 months, they were cute in the fields but now are overstaying their welcome.

You are at an advantage in that you can see which way he is travelling, you can put a trap in the run.

    Hi

save the soil as it is already finely tilled but they are a pest so best to trap and release some distance away

I have caught live ones - tho not for some years now - and released them across the other side of the stream in the neighbouring paddock.   I bought two humane traps but they never worked.   Tried sonic deterrents and smelly things and they didn't work either.

Our terrier has caught and killed one or two but her digging them out makes even more mess than the ruddy mole.

When they get too much, I use a machine called a Détaupeur (google for a little video) but in the UK they're not available so best to get in a professional mole catcher.

Tetley, I am not sure why you think soil from mole hills will kill plants, it is often used as the basis of potting compost.

I have certainly used it for years, as I regularly have moles.

I was going to ask that too.

I have moles and (a lot more) short tailed voles.  I dont mind them too much, we get owls hunting them.

If you remove the soil from the hills, you will then risk twisting your ankle when walking out there, removing soil means a hole under the ground.

you should put it back down the hole.

dont worry about killing the odd one, I live in the middle of acres and acres of wild space, as do several other people here, plenty of room for them to not become extinct.

If mine stayed in the wood, I'd be happy, but they tend to make a run for it ( see what I did then? image ) and venture further afield ( image ), then it's trap time.

Does anyone know of any useful service the moles perform?

Here they make ankle and hoof traps with their collapsible holes and tunnels in the grass and put plants in the borders in peril by bulldozing through their roots and leaving them pended or with their roots hanging in thin air instead of feeding the plants.    They also entice Rasta doggy to dig for China when she hears them scrabbling about - unsightly for the garden and she gets her nose and paws filthy - and they eat my worms!
