Mystery Mothers Day seedlings

Hello there gardening gurus,

I wondered if you might be able to help identify these seedlings that I have been nursing since my son came home with my Mother's Day gift of a plastic cup liberally sowed with small yellowish seeds about the size of mustard seeds. I made drainage holes in the cup, potted them on and these are the seedlings. They are rather hairy with good strong stems and my son thinks that it may have red flowers but I wouldn't rely on that 100%.

Does anyone please have any clues as to what these young plants are so that I know how to care for them and where to plants etc. I am assuming they are outdoor plants but they may not be.

I agree with Nut, they wouldn't be that big yet. It looks like radish to me.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

It definitely looks and sounds like your growing radishes, they have seeds very similar to mustard seeds, the bottom baby leaves of radishes look exactly as yours do, and radishes have very hairy foliage!

    Id say radish for sure!

It looks a lot like the green manure I sew a couple of years ago which was mustard.

If he brought them home from school or a club, you could ask them what the seeds are. If they were for Mothering Sunday, I would think they were more likely to be flowers. Let us know what they grow into.

My first thought was radish. If you can bear to dig one up you might find that the root is red.

If it is, it's probably on its way to becoming a radish and your son could be nearly right - red root rather than  red flowers.  image
