I have taken cuttings from these plants in the past - they seem to like the "poor" garden soil with a bit of sand that I planted them into. The mother plant should be watered well - but not very often - preferably rain rather than tap water
At least you have tried to save the plant Hazel rather than throwing it on the compost heap - so let's hope you have a display of flowers next Christmas!

try soaking the 'cuttings' in water overnight they may perk up a bit before you plant them up
