Bleeding Cherry Tree

Hi all,

I have been absent for a little while as everyone has been ill...thankfully all better now!

I have been doing my rounds in the garden (takes about 30 seconds image) , and I noticed my weeping cherry tree is bleeding what I think is sap...two orange globules at either side of the tree....

Can anyone enlighten me as to what may be the cause...and what I can do about it.

Thank you all in advance.

xx

Today my partner excavated some soil to reduce the soil level.  Scrapped the sap off the tree and prodded around (gently) with a nail in the two tiny holes on the tree.  Apparently some white/grey thick sticky substance oozed out...which I can only hope is the borer maggot/grub.

I hope this tree makes it...I love it.

Fingers crossed Allspotz - sounds like it was borers and hopefully now dead ones!

Cheers Bob...I think to be honest once I know its going to make it, I need to move it...all the wet weather this winter completely waterlogged the part of the garden where it is.  It's never done that before.

I don't suppose you have any ideas for small garden trees that will survive water logging in winter and being baked in summer...the site is in full sun

That's a tough ask for any tree Allspotz image but hollies are a pretty good all-rounder if you like them.  Personally, I would try and improve the drainage by digging in a lot of grit, adding some ericaceous compost and trying an Amelanchier:

Apologies for the late reply.  ha I always like to ask for more from my plants!

I have noticed 1 more hole but the sap is only leaking a tiny bit..not even a blob really...fingers crossed!

Thanks for the info re the Amelanchier, would this work in clay do you know...?  I noticed you suggest digging in ericaceous compost?
