Pruning cotoneaster

I have a large cotoneaster - 6' plus (don't know what variety) which has grown very leggy:  not a lot of leaves and a number of twiggy branches which look dead.  Will it respond to a hard prune, and if so, how much can I cut it back?

  • Thanks, pansyface.  No sign of disease, just getting old and with lots of bare bits!  It would be difficult to remove/replace as it's been there a long time.  I was hoping someone would say "yes, you can cut it right down and it'll regrow with a new lease of life!"  How hard can I chop it without making matters worse?

It will, I just chop them back with a hedge cutter, any time they get out of hand., they will grow cut right from the base, and nice and thick. I assume it's the one with the tiny little leaves?

  • I think it's a franchetii if that's any help.  I don't remember planting it, but the pictures I've found online look like mine - only bushier!

  • OK, I'll give it a go - can't look much worse than it does now!  Thanks, ladies.
