hydrangia buds rotting

Happy Easter everyone. I bought a small hydrangia last autumn and left it ouside in its original pot overwinter. A couple of weeks ago it looked fine but now almost all of the top buds have turned brown and wet looking. I have taken a couple of photos but can't see how to download them. The plant is macrophylla 'Libelle'. Could anyone please advise.

    Hi image

To post a photo you need to click on the green tree icon on the toolbar above where you type your post and follow the instructions.  Not sure if it works with phones yet

Mimi, it could be a combination of a frost and being too wet.  I don't know where you are or how it's been stored over winter. To upload a picture you click on the green tree icon in the dialogue box. It would help.

  • Thanks you two. I don't have the tree icon so i can't upload photos, I could on my laptop but this is a tablet. Anyway will cutting those top bits off solve it do you think, it's only the tips?

I would leave it until first week in April, then cut back to the next nice bud. If you do them early the frost will have them and you will need to do it again anyway.

  • Thank you, I will do that.

If it's in a container, I'd check it for vine weevil grubs.  I spent Friday going through my containers and they were teeming.  Had some in my hydrangea.  Still a few roots left so I repotted it (and order Nemasys) and hoping there's enough roots to have it survive.
