Lack of privacy lattice fencing

I have an area at the bottom of my garden that I never used to use and the neighbours installed fencing with lattice at the top.  I now use the bottom of the garden but I can see straight in to their garden and feel I am invading their privacy, I can see right in to their kitchen.  I want to be able to sit down there and not make eye contact every time I visit the bottom of my garden.  I get on well with all my neighbours but I just want claim this space back as it gets the sun in the afternoon.  I don't like lattice anyway as I like contemporary, but that's too bad.  Is their anything I can do to make the lattice part of the fence less see through, some sort of attachment? My side has a fig tree, a wild rose bush and a very shallow soil area so growing anything is difficult.

Thanks

Can you not plant some bamboo there? I am not sure on area size but we have the same problem by our front door as it overlooks the neighbours. It just makes things a little bit more private. If you plant bamboo in thick sheeting you won't have problems with roots spreading and will give you soft privacy.

Thanks for every ones suggestions.  I think raised beds and growing some new plants is the way forward and patience.
