Geranium germination

WonkyWombleWonkyWomble Posts: 4,539

I'm trying to grow my own perennials from seed. This is only my second year gardening so really don't have experience to compare to.

As my geranium Roxanne didn't survive the winter I thought I'd try growing some replacements. I bought some geranium painters pallet, followed instructions and sowed them on 12/3/16. They are on a warm windowsill in individual pots of moist seed compost along with Gaillardia, Rudbeckia and Penstemon. There is very slow progress and only one geranium has peeped through. They are kept moist but not wet. However my cheep annual seedlings outside in the plastic greenhouse are going great guns even though they were sown the day after the indoor perennials!

My question is, do perennial seeds take longer to germinate than annuals? Should I be concerned that only on geranium has peeped through? Please could you put me out of my misery as I'm going to start shouting at empty pots of earth soon! image

Many thanks

Hi Wonky, not so much heat I think. get them outside somewhere shaded and sheltered. The plastic GH if it's not too full sun

and yes, perennials mostly take longer to germinate than annuals.

    They're pretty reliable

Are you sure Roxanne has turned up her toes? Nothing to see of mine yet

Hosta, It is true that I'm generally impatient as a rule, but I'm trying to be more understanding with my garden! image I will refrain from shouting at them yet then image

Nut, Mum said you knew about such things....thank you! image I will find some room for them in the plastic greenhouse thing. image

Do you really think Roxanne could still be alive? Just a tiny brown woody stump! Only pokingout of the ground! I didn't cut it back, it just vanished!

    Thanks again image

I wouldn't be able to find Roxanne atm. She's come back every other year so I expect she will again.

Its true Dove. I'm impatient, can't help it, waiting takes too long! image

That's what I'm trying to do Hollie image I'm on a very limited budget both financial and time wise so I am trying to grow from seed to make the most of my resources. But think I may need to invest in a few plants to fill gaps even with my annual seedlings!

Dove, if any family ask...garden centre vouchers for birthday please image
