When is the best time to cut back Penstemons?

EmmaP2EmmaP2 Posts: 35

My penstemons have come through the winter well - but they are beginning to look a little shaggy and I would like to cut them back to get new growth - but is end of March too early to risk doing so in case of frosts??

I normally do mine mid April - still the possibility of frosts around then, but not normally bad ones.

Depends where you live Emma late April early May. New growth can be badly affected by frost.

Super - I was thinking I was being a bit impetuous!!  I will hold fire until mid-April - just in case.  I am in South East but you never know do you!  Thank you to all who responded.

    Just done mine too.

I cut off a third of the plant after flowering, in November and then down to about 3" in March.  It's on my spreadsheet so I don't have to think about maintenance, it just tells me when and what to do image

Nothing spontaneous about my gardening Hostafan1 ha ha image.  I do like to be organised.  Any sign of your hostas this year yet?  I'm up to 15 now, 5 new ones this year, so just trying to patient while I wait for them all to appear.  All hostas are labelled of courseimage
