Calamagrostis will flower early, as also Stipa gigantea--think June hay meadows. Good for later in the year: Miscanthus nepalensis--I agree--though it has a tendency to look more like an ordinary lawn grass before it flowers. Miscanthus sinensis has lots of fabulous varieties and would be my first choice: 'Flamingo', 'Ferne Osten', are more modestly sized, some become over 6 feet tall, so check! Then Panicum is another lovely grass with good varieties like 'Squaw' and 'Heavy Metal' or ones that go red in the autumn like 'Heiliger Hain'. Pennisetums also flower late and are lower-growing and wider--like Anemanthele lessoniana--all good but some Pennisetums can be tender so check. You can become an addict!
The more I look up the kind suggestions the more I'm looking forwards to having a go at these! Are they best grown from seed or is it better to buy plants?
Loving the hordeum.
Ive over googled and can't remember what this one is, but it's lovely ....and just what I'm after....
The Red Baron - will plants easily grow in front of it as I like the idea of it as a backdrop.....
Our star grass last year was Calamgrostis Brachytricha. Only about 3ft high, but the circumference is substantial, so it needs plenty of space around it.
