Lleylandi Hedge

Hi all, i moved into my new home a few years ago and it had a Lleylandi hedge in the back garden.  Ever since i have moved in, I have trimmed the hedge at the sides but have never really cut the top.  Instead with the top I go round with shears and take the long bits away however i would like to take about a foot of the top.  Is this possible, I’m worried that i cut too much and the top will just be the branches.  How do you know how much to take off the top? Also what hedge trimmers are best.  The branches are quite thick and I've got a basic one that I’m not sure will be tough enough to cut through them

Any suggestions much appreciated

Thanks

  • Great, my hedge isn't that tall.  It's only about 8 foot give or take.  However the top is an awful mess, uneven and looks awful.  I have a fairly basic hedge trimmer, do you think it would be capable of cutting through the branches.  Do you just start at the level you want to lose or do you work down to it?

Likewise ^^^^^^ I chop 6' off the top of when I feel the urge, it comes back well.

NoviceG - I used to cut my Dad's hedge which was bigger than it should have been  image  I only had his fairly basic hedgetrimmer but it did the job. The sides were well maintained but it was wide so it made doing the top a bit tricky. If the trimmer couldn't get through any of the thicker stuff, I used my loppers.

If your hedge is looking a bit untidy and undulating, you could rig up a string to get the top nice and level and then you have something to cut to. Just keep stepping back and taking a look at it.

Just don't step off a ladder though....image image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
