I've got pyracantha plants along one of my west facing fences. So long as it's kept fed and watered, oh and trimmed cause it's got a path within six inches. It really is doing well, been in about seven years.image

I was at a friends yesterday and they had a small west facing fence well covered and I asked what it was, turned out it was Passion Flowers... I know my mum did the same in her garden..

In the strip with the gravel?

How wide is the gap and how deep is the soil?

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • gap is about 180/200mm at the narrowest point - its filled with rubble the now but before fence there was a hedge - so i will need to empty and fill with soil/compost

Ivy. It grows anywhere and covers fences with zeal. There are some lovely varieties out there and you can often get several plants from one small pot of ivy purchased in a garden centre. I know it has a bad reputation (goes mad and takes over) but with vigilance it can be kept under control and the birds love to nest in it.

...and it provides the last nectar of the season for bees, and winter berries for birds - but only on old growth, so its pruning has to be judicious.
