Redcurrant Bushs

UzzyUzzy Posts: 15
I have 4 redcurrant bushes age unknown but at least 4 years old. I have not pruned them yet. The lower branches are dragging on the ground and they are very open. They are a classic wine glass shape but with no stem. Should I prune the lower 3 branches to make a stem / trunk.

I'd prune the ones on the ground, it might be too late for anything else. My bushes are just growing, next winter you can prune some of the old branches out,the very dark coloured onesimage

I did completely the wrong thing.  New allotment, large redcurrant bushes which had been very neglected.  I thought i read somewhere that i should prune them.  I did this - badly.  Ironically the one we ripped up and planted near the perimeter wall as a 'last chance' option, is growing beautifully with lots of healthy leaves opening.  Will the first twobutchered ones recover, albeit probably not this year?

I gave mine a good prune both last year and had another go this year seem to survive.
