Although I hate slugs I couldn't snip them in two, that's a bit cruel and the salt bath too. I put them in a poly bag put them in the bin and that's the end of it.

Linda is it not more cruel to let the slugs die slowly in a poly bag? I know if I had to choose I'd want the short and painless death of a sharp blade than a drawn out death maybe hours or even days in a plastic bag.

I am hoping that thanks to my pond and the copious spawn (& the hedgehog who lives in the hedge) that i will soon have a small army to keep on top of the slugs. Last year I took to putting them in a bowl on the bird feeder: survival of the fastest!

Sharp trowel chops them in half and a crack with the back of it sorts out snails..I don't take prisoners image

    Linda. I'm with Clari.

Days in a polybag is infinitely more cruel than a split second snip.

Clari I don't seal the bag so if they escape then they are not coming back into my garden.

Caught some small slugs having eaten half of the tulip leaves that have just started to unravel. Nothing more since I've put down the coffee grounds. My front garden now smells like a coffee shop but I'm not complaining!

  • Hi,

I always use slug clear liquid as recommended on the packet, it is a little expensive but has made a big improvement on the slug population, as has copper tapes, the best time to use it is any day after 14th February  then once a month on your beds. I agree that the coffee grounds don't work neither do egg shells, I even had a slug that ate a very prickly cactus plant,  also neither does sharp grit on top of pots they do like a assault course to give them a good challenge. image

all that grit and work helps them evolve faster into teflon-belllied little savages
