Again many thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice. I am keeping moving and taking plenty of Ibrufen and will most definitely leave the rocks well alone. Yoga may well help I obviously need to be more supple. Good news is not feeling so miserable thanks everyone
I really sympathize with you MsGreenFingers - very frustrating for you. I lifted some very heavy pots about 3 weeks ago and a day or so later I could hardly walk - and had the most excruciating pain for about 2 weeks until very gradually I found that I could do a little more each day. The physio recommended gentle exercise - eg hunching my shoulders and then relaxing, not sitting in one place for too long - in fact I found it more comfortable to be standing up rather than sitting - a velcro support belt from the chemist helped a great deal. If you find after a week that there is no improvement then seek medical help and in the meantime ask someone else to do the heavy work for you if at all possible - don't push yourself to do more than you are comfortably capable of doing.
More sympathies from me Ms GreenFingers, I've had 3 bouts of back pain in last 18 months. 2 of which were the can't stand upright mega pain types. Ended up on seriously strong pain killers and muscle relaxants from the doctor which really did help plus a few brutal physio sessions
Take it easy but keep moving and don't try to rush into anything. I still have to remember to not to do too much in one go, which is really difficult when you get engrossed in something
I used to have hideous lower back pain. Years ago I got several one-on-one sessions in the Feldenkrais technique and took several classes and the back pain was gone within a few weeks. It (the pain) was due to bad posture combined with bad patterns of movement and now it only comes back every three years or so. I do do yoga too, but I do Feldenkrais when my muscles are too tight and sore for yoga.

Hope you're feeling better soon. My sister swears by a good bath with your favourite bubbles to ease a back.
