Watering Orchids

  • I've just noticed, Tads, that not only the bowl has no drainage holes but there are no aerial roots visible, either.  I thought these roots are essential for photosynthesis and absorbtion of moisture from the atmosphere.

I'm most confused but that's not really surprising as I'm no expert; I trust those with real experience in the field, will offer their opinions, perhaps?

I think it's going to be tricky with no drainage holes, I think I would repot it in a clear plastic pot.

About once a month I stand my orchids in a bowl of tepid tap water that contains a few drops of orchid feed.  I leave them for about 20 mins then take them out and leave them to drain completely

Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • Tads. I grow my Orchid just as yours are in glass with moss. I water so that the jar is about a quarter full ordinary tap water, then leave once that has disappeared in a week or so I just water again.

They have two types of root some below and others that are in free air all the roots  need light that's why the come in clear pots, don't be tempted to cover the roots that are growing out in the free air.

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.
  • Sorry forgot don't mist them you should not get the leaves wet or the flowers, just wipe the leaves with a soft cloth to remove any dust occasionally.

I am a complete novice about Orchids I have been reading this thread through.

All I know about this one is that it is "The £5 one from ASDA"

I have shown you the flower and the leaves  which might give the knowlegable some clues about what sort it might be..

    Thank You.

Thank you.  I will try and see if I can get it through a year without killing it off.
