Are these weeds?

Hi

I'm not an experienced gardener and needs some advice on some plants that keep appearing in my flower bed and seem to spread aggressively.  I have planted many mixed bags of bulbs and flower seeds, so I'm not quite sure if they are flowers or weeds.  I have attached pictures below, any help identifying if they are good or bad would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi Rigsby image

To post a photo you need to click on the green tree icon on the toolbar above where you type your post.  It doesn't work with all devices, but the new upgraded forum will start any day now and it'll be must easier to post from phones, tablets etc.

The first one looks like Arum maculatum aka Lords & Ladies, Cuckoo Pint, http://wildflowerfinder.org.uk/Flowers/L/LordsAndLadies/LordsAndLadies.htm

a wild plant - it depends upon your garden style as to whether it's a weed or not - its fine in woodland gardens etc, but not really for a formal border.  However it's a pain to get rid of but dies down in the summer.  If you remove the seedheads to prevent self seeding it'll help a bit to stop it spreading.

The second one looks like a Lychnis to me, possibly L. coronaria  - think they're called Silene nowadays rather than Lychnis.  A pretty plant which self seeds itself around http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/7569.shtml

Not sure about the last - it looks a bit like one of the willowherbs which can be a nuisance - but it could be several other things too - see what others think - someone else will be along soon

I agree with Dove on the Arum, not sure on the second and the third looks like Rosebay Willowherb.

I would go with Dove on all three. I would have the top and bottom ones out,  leave the middle one, the bees love it.

First one is an Arum, but don't know which one. Second is Lychnis and it will be either white flowered or fuchsia pink. Third one I think is a weed.

I think the 3rd is a willowherb but not rosebay. image

  • Ohhhhh - I had that second plant in my garden that grew out of nowhere and spread like wild fire image.

It may spread a bit, but it's a pretty garden plant and is easily removed if it grows where you don't want it.

It's certainly not one to worry about image
