My grandad brought me a new oxygenating plant today, one that has no clear roots on it and came wrapped in a metal band to tie them together.
Thing is I'm not sure what it is and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't of took that band off and left it on the surface of the pond! I think I saw Monty Don with these things and I swear they are supposed to sink!
Please help!

Yes they generally do have roots and the little metal band acts as a sinker until they make some, but if it's the type I'm thinking of the roots will grow in a couple of weeks anyway.
Ack! What a foolish mistake I made then by taking the metal band off! I feel like such an idiot lol.
I will have to get a new metal band or something so they can sink. I hope they don't die from floating on the surface..

So... will I need the metal band or will they sink/root by themselves?
What you could do is to get a smallish stone and fasten the bottoms of the plant stems to it with an elastic band or string. This will act as a replacement weight for the lead band they came with and hold the plants at the bottom until they take root. Even if they just stay on the surface they will come to no harm whatsoever as Waterbutts commented.
