strange-looking-plant
Afternoon all. Have just joined the forum and look forward to joining in the various discussions. First though, I have an acient looking shrub in my front garden happily nesteling between a couple of fruit trees. The branches look almost succulent or at the very least not your usual twiggy type. This time of year it flowers and produces ovoid type berries. They almost look like mishapen blue berries and produce a very dark juice. Any ideas? A couple of snaps attached......

It's a Mahonia but not sure which one
Yes definitely a mahonia.
A rather chlorotic Mahonia in need of some food. The berries are edible by the way, bit no taste to my way of thinking.
I didn't realise the berries were edible! I used to play with them as a child - they make a lovely red colour when smushed - but I never dared eat them. The blackbirds enjoy them though. A nice distraction from our blueberry plants!
I always curse our mahonia, because the leaves take forever to decompose and remain horrendously prickly the entire time. Yours look like they'll be a little softer on unsuspecting hands!
Great - thanks for the replies. I'll find something suitable to feed it. Its competing with apple, pear, hedge and grass in that spot!
