Rudbeckia seedlings

Any advice on Rudbeckia please - I have grown two or three varieties from seed Toto Gold, & Dwarf. They took a while to germinate and seem to be slow to get going- when would they be ready to put outside?

I grow rudbeckias from seed every year, and don't find them too tricky.  Mine are still currently in their germinating trays. In a couple of weeks I'll prick them out into bigger seed trays and put them in an unheated GH, but I will cover them with plastic lids every night til its reliably warmer, and put fleece over that too if a cold night is forecast.  They then go into individual pots and then planted out in garden early June.  I am in the southeast, but in a bit of a frost pocket.

hope that helps ....they are well worth the effortimage

  • Fantastic, thanks chicky - what a beautiful display you had - was that last year? I am looking forward to a similar display. We are quite advanced weather wise - but we do get a lot of wind here - so I am a little concerned that one of the frequent storms may flatten them. At present my seeds have germinated in cold GH and I have thinned them out into individual sections of trays and some into 3" pots. I plan to plant them out next month - we have only had two frosts this year and I am fairly confident that we won't have any more .......!

Yes it was last year GD - they went on til Christmas ! If you don't get frosts you might get them to behave like perennials - I treat them like annuals here and grow a fresh batch each year, but every now and then a stray one comes through winter and flowers the next year.
  • That sounds promising chicky - I look forward to a long, and happy display of them - but the wind will be their worst enemy - only two very light frosts this year ..... I hope I am not tempting fate by mentioning that - every once in a while we get a dollop of snow - last seen about 3 years ago.

Thanks Hollie - they are really important in this garden as the deer don't eat them, so they are used profusely !! They are fast becoming my signature plant !

Last year not one germinated this year I sowed on 26/02 and still have no seedlings. All my chilli, toms, pepper etc are next to the tray have germinated.

Not sure where I am going wrong here.

Might have to buy plugs or plants later in season.
