Caterpillars

My primroses and primulas are being shredded by brown caterpillars.  They like to shred the leaves and eat the tops of the flowers just before they flower.

I think they must come out at night because I don't always see them during the day but I found about 8 yesterday when inspecting closely.

Can anyone advise please....?

Its a bit early in the year for caterpillars. Do you have a photo of the beasts?

  • I know ... they've been around on and off for at least a month!  Don't have a photo at the mo but I will take my phone out and try and catch one.  Some are big - about an inch when they uncurl.

  • A-ha!  Just popped out and there he was ....

Think it's the caterpillar of the Angle Shades moth. I'd scatter some dried mealworms and suet sprinkles around your plants to attract the blackbirds and robins etc who will then find and eat the caterpillars - hopefully image

  • Beautiful and original to look at ... not so beautiful when munching my primulas.  Found another 4 caterpillars in the dark this evening.  Do birds feed at night?

Where do the caterpillars hide during the day?

Pick them off and put them on the wild plants suggested - moths pollinate just the same as butterflies and bees ....... it would be a shame to destroy them ........
