Best herbs to plant in a double wall

Hi

 Hi all

We have a new patio under construction, will be finished this summer, and due to a large drop into the garden it's contained by a new retaining wall. I asked the brickies to do a double wall at the garden side, to allow me to plant within the wall - aiming to soften up the new brickwork and get easy access to edible plants from the patio.

I'd appreciate some tips on which herbs will do best in this wall space. I'd like a mix of hardy herbs like sage and rosemary, and annuals/tenders like basil, oregano etc. I'm guessing I may need to section off bits of it to leave room each year for the replacement annuals/avoid the stronger varieties overcrowding them.

I'm thinking maybe some strawberries too as they might like hanging over the wall. I wouldn't mind adding some agapanthus to flower it up in parts but I suspect they won't do the wall much good (they like to push out of their pots I believe, so perhaps best avoided here?). I'm not planning to do veg here as I have a veg plot already. Also I'm not keen on alpines.

I've loaded a picture of one edge of the wall, but I'm not convinced it's uploaded after several attempts. So, the size of the wall is 6 metres long, very deep (despite what it looks like in the picture it's over 1 metre deep as we have a temporary cover in it) and the width of the cavity is brick width. So shallow in width but long and deep. After the steps, the wall is repeated the other side, so 12 linear metres to plant up in total.

I'm in the South. The wall faces south/slightly west, and is warm and sunny but windy.

The brickies will take care of the wall-care (drainage holes, grit in the bottom half, waterproof the rest etc before I put some loam based soil in), so I'm looking for tips here on which herbs will cope in this situation best, as it is a bit of a confined space, and which are best to avoid. ?

Many thanks.

All those you mentioned would succeed in your wall plus thyme, marjoram, winter and summer savory, french tarragon . Ones to avoid are those that like moist soil such as Chervil, parsley, balm, sorrel and sweet Cicely or are too big/vigorous like fennel, mint and lovage.

  • Thanks Invicta2, good news.

I'd forgotten about tarragon, that's a great tip, and also I was a bit worried too about mint taking over the wall, so I will avoid that one - despite strawberries and mint being a good Pimms-ready plant combination!

    Thanks again.

I would put in a few trailing geraniums. Lots of colour and they don't mind the soil being a bit dry.

  • Thanks Mel
