  • Right, here is a little taster of our garden. I shall create seperate posts for my questions otherwise there will be around 20 questions in one post and it will get confusing!

Our back garden was enclosed by overgrown conifers. One of the first things we did when we moved in was to remove the ones from the back bed. I cant seem to find a picture of what they were like but you can see in this pic some of the trunks that we still had to dig out. We back onto a care home garden so we have scotch pines towering above.

Here is what the side of the garden looked like.. We cut about 6ft off them last year but they are blocking so much sunlight that we're probably going to remove them (although our neighbour wont be best pleased.)

One of the beds in the front garden looked like this the other day but I have managed to weed and straighten the edges a little as you can see..

  • To open up the garden more and to let in more light you can cut back anything that is overhanging your boundary, the law says you need to offer it back to your neighbours as its their property but most people don't bother so unless you have neighbours who might make a fuss just dump it.

  • As for removing stuff in your garden do what you like its your garden. our first house had a conifer hedge all down one side we ripped the lot out and the neighbour was not to pleased until the next summer when they realised how much bigger their garden appeared to be and ours defiantly was about 12 feet wider.

    Hi Laura

You seem to have the potential for a beautiful garden based on the photo's you have supplied. It would seem the you have done some weeding to that boarder. Get them out when they are just coming up and you will save yourself a lot of work. As already stated, if you reduce or cut back the conifers you will let a lot more light into the garden. This will help your lawn and sun loving plants. Obviously you can use plants that require part shade to full shade in other areas of the garden that does not get full sun.

Very best of luck and enjoy your garden
