Pests

So early into spring and I have a problem which I think has never been far away. My Delphiniums like my Aquilegia's have been putting on growth early, but I have just noticed today that all the shoots of the Delphinium have been eaten. I am thinking it is the larvae of either a caterpillar or vine weevil. I have dug the plant in Q up, washed it off, but found no grubs, but planted it temporarily in some compost. Any ideas people?

Vine weevil larvae eat the roots of plants.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Slugs, they are about now, they won't eat your aquilegia though. There aren't any caterpillars around yet, too soon for butterflies, but later you may find some tiny weeny caterpillars on your Aquis.

I could of sworn I saw some form of grub(larvea) in the soil as i washed it of the roots though??

    Thanks Verdun,

Just seems strange as all the snails that I have found in the garden seem dormant, plus the slugs.? Instead of provado would garlic concentrate work?

Slugs. try crushed baked eggshells around each plant, and slug pubs.

Well either way my Aqua's and Dels are being put in pots and going in the same protection plan as the hostas lol
