Ticks

B3B3 Posts: 27,503

Got bitten by a tick in my garden last year and I'm a bit wary about returning to the scene of the crime.

Do they lurk around the same place or will they have hitched a lift on something and moved on. Do you get them in groups or are they loners?

Hope someone can answer my question because I need to crawl about at the back of the border to get that climbing winding thing with the little pink flowers before it chokes my roses.

Ticks do walk about B3 they normally congregate at the upper end of vegetation and latch on to passing hosts. The higher the vegetation the more likely they are present. Keeping an area short is the best solution you certainly can't eradicate them.

Thanks Dave. I'll bear that in mind. Been grubbing about at ground level today. At least I know what a bite looks likeimage

Make sure you keep your tetanus jabs up to date B3 if there's a risk of ticks.

My OH had a tick on his leg some years ago, his leg swelled up to double its size he had to go to hospital and was given the tetanus jab, even though he had had one, but they couldn't take the risk.

Wear long trousers and wear your socks outside. Wear long sleeves. This only applies when you are working in vegetation as ticks like to hitch a lift on passing warm-blooded animals.
  • Hey, all of the above mentioned advice is true. You can pull your socks over your trousers or use a repellent for the uncovered skin when the weather is nice. Just remember to always check yourself for ticks after a day in the garden. Ticks come from beneath and like to be at warm places of the body, like the armpits. • Cats can carry ticks too B3 - I regularly have to detick mine because they knock around with the sheep image
