dahlias

rosad1rosad1 Posts: 7

ive been gardening for some years now and have recently taken a shine to dahlias. i manage to keep them all fungus free all winter dusted with sulphur some in dry peat/coir and some (the largest tubers) i pot on and keep under a bench in shed, they seem to survive but when i plant out the ones kept in peat i lose quite a few! should i "chit" them first?

When I lift mine, I try to keep a bit of soil around them . They're stuck in the polytunnel sitting side by side. I've never used sulphur and a couple of days ago I just gave them the merest sprinkle of water over them.

As usual, although this year they were even more neglected, mine were withered and sere to the max, I put them into pots of damp potting soil about two weeks ago and eight of them have sprouted so far. patience is the key, even the most unpromising will frequently respond.

Rosad do you plant straight into the ground? If so when and what is your soil like?

thanks everyone for your responce. the problem up here on the north east coast is late frosts and icey easterly winds and even using tons of grit my heavy clay just loves to hang on to the moisture so is the general consensous that i should start them off under cover, pot them up and plant them out in full growth when all danger of frost has gone (about 1st week  in June?)

Rosad yes basically. Let them get going first they have a much better chance of giving of their best if you have those weather conditions.
