Dear Gardeners World could you tell me what sort of tree this is please.  I live inAbu Dhabi and my husband has had a bad reaction to,it, he was helping a neighbour put it back in his garden after a big storm and something from it must have touched his head to which he has ended up with water blisters..... Your help in finding out what species it is wuld be very helpful .  Thanks Lynn

    I'm afraid I can't see the picture.

You can upload a photo by clicking on the green tree icon on the toolbar above where you type your post and follow the instructions.

Or you can put the photo on a photo-hosting site and post a link to it

  • it has green trunk and branches with large thorns and yellow flowers we have no idea what it is but it has a sting in its tail that's for sure Lynn

..in your area this may be the tree Retama sphaerocarpa, a thorny native to north Africa and the Levant.... part of the Broom family... over here we would grow Genista aetnensis which is similar...

...Retama can cause allergic reactions I think... if you want to look into that...

It does look similar to Genista aetnensis aka Mount Etna Broom (one of my favourite trees).

I don't know Retama sphaerocarpa but if, as Marlorena says it's similar and more common in your area then my guess is that she's right and that's what it is - especially if it can cause allergic reactions.

I've never known the Genista to cause any allergy problems other than hayfever when it's in flower.

Hope your husband makes a swift recovery.  image
