Vegetable beds, things you dont move, perennial veg

a1154a1154 Posts: 1,108

Hi, after sticking anything anywhere in my newly created beds, i am now thinking about it and re-planning what should go where.

It does seem though, that there arent many veggies that stay in the same place - rhubarb and asparagus (not doing well) I have got.  What else is perennial/stays in the same bed?  Its for south scotland and i need it to be reasonably easy to grow, i am not the most skilled or patient!

  • Not sure of any other veggies that stay in the ground but fruit bushes do - black/red currants, gooseberry, miniature fruit trees - raspberry canes, strawberries can last two or three seasons before being removed. A wall can take loganberries - we have had our logans for over 20 years and still get a good crop if the plants are kept correctly.

The two artichokes, Globe and Jerusalem are perennials. Given a sunny spot Jerusalem will grow in most soils, but it can become invasive. Not sure of the conditions the Globe likes, it is essentially a giant thistle so probably quite tolerant of a range of soils. Two perennial salad plants are Sorrel and salad burnet both very easy to grow.

Chives and mint stay in the same spot. Gooseberries and blackberries too. Ooh and raspberries.

Thanks all.  I have fruit bushes.  J artichokes might be good, not sure what i would do with globe. I dont know either of those salads, will look up.  Got chives and mint.  Love chives as flowers too, so i have them all over the place.

cardoon sounds exciting, they are huge arent they?  never seen them for sale though.

Mint and Horseradish can become invasive. Globe artichokes you eat the unopened flower head, supposed to be a great delicacy. I thought it smelled like a dandelion flower when I tried it.
