laying turf in New build garden.

I have recently moved into a new build home and having spent all my money on the house I am going to attempt to turf the back garden myself to save money. the soil if you can call it that is pretty poor, I am going to rotavate and remove the large stones. What I am unsure about is how much topsoil I need. Also the soil there just now is level with the slabs that have been laid. So I am assuming I am going to  have to remove a fair bit of soil before I can add any top soil. Anybody have any experience in disposing of large quantities of dirt? Any advice will be good.

P.S. I am a 25 year old with zero gardening experience

How large is the garden James by area? You needn't remove any soil unless it's subsoil, even then subsoil can be incorporated into topsoil and will break down. How have the slabs been laid? Are they bedded into a sharp sand concrete mix? Lastly can you post a picture? It will help us to assist you. To post a picture click on the green tree icon on the toolbar.
