Osmanthus: pruning

Can I successfully reduce the height/width of my Osmanthus ( after it flowers in the spring) by cutting it back into the wood? I have done this previously with deciduous shrubs.

I can't remember the variety. It's about 30 years old and rather than it's annual trim, I will take your advice and cut it hard back. Thanks.

Verdun - the osmanthus will be getting cut back this week, weather permitting.   Can I go 6 inches into the bare wood?
