Does anyone know what this is? The root goes on for ever, like Ground Elder roots!
Not one I'm on close terms with but might be Dogs Mercury, Mercurialis perennis. Might have mis-spelled that.
Have googled Mercurialis perennis and I think you've got it. Thanks nut.
I grew up with Dogs Mercury - that's what you've got.
I failed to get Dogs Mercury going here, what does it like?
Very common in woods round here [N.W England] so it likes shade, seems to prefer drier areas. Soils are mild acid generally clay with a lot of leaf mould.
Thanks Invicta. I've got the shade and some clay but very alkaline
Growing up on the farm in High Suffolk the woods and hedgerows were full of it. We were on heavy clay - definitely alkaline.
I might have another go if acid not essential
It's such a pretty thing

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
