Apple tree with a wound in the bark

I have just inherited an allotment and one of the small apple trees has a deep split in the bark. It is an old wound so too late to treat with a protective wound paint. The soil is heavy with some clay so I am a bit anxious that the tree will be prone to canker if left. Any advice?
