Boggy rocky mess!

My partner and I have just moved house, we saw so much potential in the garden as its not too big for our first project together. Today after a good few days of good weather we thought we would make a start on cleaning it up a bit etc. The grass is so boggy it is unreal, I decided to stick a fork in it as my friend said it may be laid on concrete. It's not laid on concrete it is laid on a bed of soil mixed with rocks of all different shapes and sizes, hence the less than adequate drainage/ just about no drainage at all. We were so excited to start gardening and I was hoping to turn it in to a new hobby for my self. As a complete gardening novice I am lost as to what to do. I wanted to put a rockery in and someone told me a good way to reduce water would be to put a strip of gravel at the bottom of the banking that comes down into our garden. I just can't see a way forward now, I'm gutted. We probably have two inch of soil before it hits the mixture of rock, soil, clay and whatever else is under there image Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Welcome Kayray and don't worry image

We'll enjoy helping you make a lovely garden.  Can you post some photos of the garden and give us some idea of the direction it faces, and whereabouts roughly you are image

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply, I have had to attach them to a link as it wont let me upload for some reason.

I really appreciate your help, I hope something can be done with it as I was so excited!!

My partner says he thinks the garden is facing east.

It is very mossy at the bottom of the garden, I don't think the banking area helps, but above is all farm land. We live in Holmfirth.

I love hydrangeas, they are my fave plant.

What if I dug some areas up and took some rock and stone out and replaced it with a mixture of sand and compost, mixed with the already existing soil?

Someone told me to plant conifers as they can dry out soil a little, is this true?

I am definitely going to have some raised beds I think that's going to be the best way forward.

Thank you for your suggestions. It's going to be a big job, I just hope it can all come together image

Thank you Hazel, I didn't mean to include those pictures of me sorry, haha! (Deffo not me) ????

My dad said to plant some to block it off but it is ours, don't think there's much we can do with it though. We are going to pull all the rubbish dead crispy stuff out, believe it or not on those pictures we had already raked LOTS of it away. The previous people also left us a nice compost heap on the hill so we have that to use.

My partner has been out trying to pull some of the rocks up and it's like sodden with water about a foot deep! Can't see anything but a huge scorching heat wave drying it out!! image

We have dug deeper, there is so much clay. I have taken more pictures which I will post when I am on my laptop.

Under parts it is swimming in water/sludge.
