Just a random thought thrown out to see if anyone has had any weird or unusual success.

Has to be plants of the same family.  Roses onto roses, apples onto apples etc.  Pears can be grafted onto quince 'cos they're closely related.

I think the weird one is tomatoes grafted on to potato plants, but both are Solanum family.
