Large deep hole under lawn
The ground is collapsing in my garden due to a large excavation that goes from my flower bed and about 2 feet under my lawn. Thought it might have been foxes or badger but now wonder if it's down to roots rotting down after taking a very tall eucalyptus out about 10 years ago? Not sure what to do.

Try digging into the hole and see if you find a line of rotten root wood as the depth and timing does fit with your eucalyptus theory and you would have the idea confirmed. If so you need to fill the hole with a mix of grit [for good drainage], top soil and compost and then sow grass seed. If you find evidence of animals then there are chemicals that are supposed to discourage them without harming them. You would need to identify which animal it is for the correct chemical. If it is neither of these causes then you need professional advice on ground sinking.
Thanks Invicta2, think that might just be my weekend project! flumpy1 - I hope not too!
No Chloe, not a mining area thankfully. The hole doesn't go straight down. Going to hope that the root theory is the right one and have a dig at the weekend.
Well, I've started to dig today and there is quite a lot of rotten root in part of the hole and have dug about 2 feet down now with no creatures expressing their disgust at being disturbed so think (hope) that the culprit is the Eucalyptus! I think my summer project is going to be 'operation fill that hole!' Thank you all for you help and suggestions x
