Badgers

Can anybody tell me a humane way of getting rid of badgers from my garden. They seem determined to try and get under my shed and also dig deep holes in my lawn to use as a toilet.  I have a cat so therefore have to be careful what I use.

Badgers are a protected species so you are not permitted to harm them in any way. All you can do is try to make your garden boundaries secure but as they can both dig and climb this won't be easy.

  • I don't want to harm them I just want to stop them coming into my garden. As I live in open country I can't make my garden boundaries secure. Thought maybe the scent of something they don't like could be scattered around the boundaries.

My daughter had a similar problem and solved it by spraying male urine along her fenceimage

Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • We had read about that. Will have to send my husband down the garden and try it out. haha image

Rosemary, we have a similar problem here, we can't badger proof the garden (boundary is currently a combination of walls which they can climb, hedging and a post/rail fence) and to be fair the Badgers were here before us!

They seem to scratch around in the lawn at this time of year looking for chafer grubs, it usually recovers ok though. Our neighbour gets his lawn sprayed to kill the grubs which seems to have discouraged the badger but I'm not keen on chemicals.

Our biggest problem is having veg stolen. I planted Jerusalem artichokes on Saturday only to discover Monday morning that they had all been eaten! They made off with the birds peanut feeder too! Last year they left my veg alone completely and just raided the compost heap once in a while image

From what I've been reading spreading chilli powder seems like an option. I'll be planting out my potatoes this weekend so will give the chilli powder idea a go! If the potatoes survive either the chilli powder works or potatoes just aren't as tastey as artichokes!
