If you want to keep it clean and green, the only way is to dig them out.

I was faced with the same, you'll be surprised how it does get done once you make a start. Bit at a time.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

"I agree with Fairygirl as well.

Remove obvious rubbish and then I would just let the garden 'talk' to you.

"Keep a lookout for signs of different birds and wildlife and move from there.Don'tin too much of a rush to get it 'finished'.

Also in the first year you may find plants and shrubs coming up/out you didn't know werethere. What grows where, shady areas, damp, dry etc.

See what you have in the first year.

I really do envy you with a garden like that! image"

I love this post from Madpenguin....I would do this.....don't be in a hurry to "pritify" this.  If you do you will likely loose the wildlife that is already there.  This is an oasis in Hackney.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • You seem to have a lot of woodland plants there in a lovely space. Think I can see foxgloves and brunnera so you might want to look those up so you can recognise them and then decide to leave or pull out as you wish. Dont think you will miss the nettle once theyre gone and pond would be excellent for wildlife. But yes I would go for the wait and see approach. Not everything is up at the same time of year and you probably have many more pleasant surprises to come! In an existing garden you are meant to wait a watch a whole year...but I totally realise with this being over grown you are probably champing at the bit to get started. Enjoy !! image

  • Thanks, some more great ideas. I appreciate it! Hopefully, will get started and make some decent progress this weekend but promise not to rush it. Just can't wait to get started.
