When the Irish stop using peat in their power stations, I'll stop using it in my plant pots.

    Devon.

I've been growing my tomatoes in peat free compost for years and the plants have been enormous. All the plants on the patio are in peat free too and they grow very well. I'll concede that most of the peat free composts on offer are pretty vile.....you just have to find the right one.

Green waste is hot composted which kills seeds and weeds.

I've always used peat free, it does the trick. I once bought a chilli plant for my mother. It was in peat based compost and by the time I got it back home the compost was bone dry and I was unable to wet it again, awful stuff.
